Nutrition Labelling

Nutrition Labelling Services

Nutrition labelling is a crucial element of food packaging that empowers consumers to make informed, health-conscious choices about the products they purchase. By providing clear, standardised information on key nutrients, these labels help people understand the nutritional value of the foods they consume. This transparency not only supports healthier eating habits but also builds trust between consumers and brands. For manufacturers and distributors, offering detailed nutrition information can boost product credibility and meet the growing demand for healthier, more transparent food options. In a world where health awareness is increasingly important, nutrition labeling plays a vital role in promoting better nutrition, ensuring consumer safety and fostering positive dietary habits.

Partner with TEL Expert Solutions to invest in nutrition labeling that keeps your customers informed and enhances your brand’s credibility in a competitive marketplace.

WHAT’S ON A NUTRITION LABEL?

Collection of Nutrition Facts Labels

Also known as the Nutrition Information Panel (NIP), Nutrition Facts or Nutrition Declaration, this label is found on food and beverage packaging and provides detailed information about a product's nutritional content. Nutrition labelling is especially important for consumers following specific or restricted diets.

For every pre-packaged product that carries a nutrition label, it must comply with the regulations and format requirements of the country or region where it is sold. The label must include all mandatory nutrient parameters as specified by local authorities.

Here are some common essential parameters to consider when labelling your product:

1. Energy (in kcal or kJ)
The energy content within a serving or specified quantity of product, helping consumers manage their daily caloric intake in line with their dietary and health goals.

2. Protein (in g)
The protein content within a serving or specified quantity of product, enabling consumers to assess the product’s protein contribution for muscle maintenance, satiety and nutrition.

3. Fat (in g)
The total fat content within a serving or specified quantity of product, allowing consumers to evaluate how the product fits into their recommended fat intake.

4. Saturated Fat (in g)
The amount of saturated fat within a serving or specified quantity of product, enabling consumers to limit intake of fats linked to heart disease and maintain a balanced diet.

5. Trans Fat (in g)
The amount of trans fat within a serving or specified quantity of product, providing important information for those looking to avoid fats associated with elevated cholesterol and cardiovascular risks.

6. Cholesterol (in mg)
The level of dietary cholesterol present within a serving or specified quantity of product, offering useful information for individuals managing heart health or monitoring cholesterol levels.

7. Carbohydrates (in g)
The total carbohydrate content within a serving or specified quantity of product, helping consumers understand the energy contribution from carbohydrates for meal planning.

8. Sugars (in g)
The amount of sugars within a serving or specified quantity of product, supporting consumers in monitoring sugar intake in line with dietary recommendations or health conditions like diabetes.

9. Dietary Fibre (in g)
The fibre content within a serving or specified quantity of product, assisting consumers in selecting foods that support digestion, satiety and overall well-being.

10. Sodium (in mg) or Salt (in g)
The sodium or salt content within a serving or specified quantity of product, helping consumers control salt intake, particularly those with high blood pressure or cardiovascular concerns.

NOTE: Specified quantity is usually in either 100 grams (g) or 100 millilitres (ml).

Certain parameters may be further broken down into sub-categories. For example, fat content may be divided into saturated fats, monounsaturated fats, polyunsaturated fats and trans fats. The level of detail and specific sub-parameters depends on the regulations of the country, food type and other local requirements.

HOW IS NUTRITION LABELLING TYPICALLY PERFORMED?

Two commonly-accepted methods for nutrition labeling: (1) Laboratory Testing and (2) Nutritional Calculations.

IS NUTRITION INFORMATION PANEL LABEL MANDATORY?

Collection of Food Products with their Nutrition Information Panel (NIP)

The requirement for nutrition labeling varies significantly across countries, reflecting differences in regulatory priorities, consumer awareness, and public health strategies. In many parts of the world, nutrition labeling is mandatory for pre-packaged foods, with standardised information on energy, fat, carbohydrates, protein, and other key nutrients. These labels are designed to help consumers make informed dietary choices and to support broader public health goals, such as reducing the prevalence of diet-related diseases.

However, this approach is not universal. In some regulatory systems, nutrition labeling is only required when a food product makes a nutrition or health claim, such as being "low in fat" or "a source of calcium." Importantly, such claims are generally expected to be substantiated with supporting evidence, often through food testing or scientific analysis. Exemptions may also apply to certain food categories, like fresh produce or minimally processed items. As a result, while nutrition labels have become increasingly common and expected by consumers, their presence is not guaranteed on all products. The global landscape remains a patchwork of different practices, balancing transparency with practical considerations such as industry capacity and product type.

Nutrition Labelling in Singapore: What Every Food & Beverage Business Should Know

In Singapore, nutrition labelling is generally not mandatory for all pre-packaged products. However, it becomes compulsory under specific circumstances, namely when:

  • a nutrition claim is made (i.e. Lower in Sugar, High in Calcium, etc.)

  • the product bears the Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS)

  • the product falls under the Nutri-Grade labelling system, currently applicable to beverages and, from mid-2027, selected food categories such as salt, sauces, pastes, seasonings, instant noodles and oil.

When nutrition labelling is required, the following nutrient information must, at a minimum, be declared on the packaging:

  1. Energy, in kcal, kJ or both per 100g or 100ml

  2. Protein, in g/100g or g/100ml

  3. Total Fat, in g/100g or g/100ml

  4. Carbohydrate, in g/100g or g/100ml

  5. Any nutrient for which the claim is made

While these are the minimum requirements, SFA and HPB strongly encourage businesses to go beyond regulatory compliance by providing more comprehensive nutritional information. This proactive approach not only supports consumer education, but also strengthens brand transparency, consumer trust and competitiveness in an increasingly health-conscious market.

Businesses that wish to exceed baseline requirements may adopt the Standard Nutrition Information Panel (NIP) format, which presents a complete set of core nutrients in a structured and consumer-friendly layout.

For products bearing the Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) or the Nutri-Grade mark, more detailed nutritional labelling is mandatory in accordance with the respective scheme's criteria.

Below is an overview of the additional nutrient declarations required under these labelling systems:

Standard NIP & Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS)

  • Saturated Fat, in g/100g or g/100ml

  • Trans Fat, in g/100g or g/100ml

  • Cholesterol, in mg/100g or mg/100ml

  • Total Sugar, in g/100g or g/100ml

  • Dietary Fibre, in g/100g or g/100ml

  • Sodium, in mg/100g or mg/100ml

Infographic on Singapore Nutri-Grade Beverages

Nutri-Grade Mark

For beverages, the following must be included:

  • Saturated Fat, in g/100ml

  • Total Sugar, in g/100ml

For extented categories such as salt, spices, sauces, pastes, seasonings, instant noodles and oil (effective mid-2027), the following must be included:

  • Sodium, in mg/100g or mg/100ml (not required for oil)

  • Saturated Fat, in g/100g or g/100ml (not required for salt)

  • Total Sugar, in g/100g or g/100ml (not required to salt and oil)

Failure to adhere to nutrition labelling regulations can result in significant consequences can lead to enforcement actions such as fines, product recalls, or border rejections. It is therefore essential for businesses to ensure their product labels are accurate, complete, and fully aligned with current regulations.

Healthier Choice Symbol

Products with Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS)

The Healthier Choice Symbol (HCS) is a voluntary front-of-pack labelling programme managed by HPB. It is designed to empower consumers to make more informed food choices by identifying pre-packaged products that meet specific nutritional criteria within their respective food categories.

The HCS supports 34 variants of single or double positive nutrition claims, including but not limited to:

  • No Added Sugar

  • Lower in Sodium

  • Higher in Calcium

  • Lower in Saturated Fat

  • Eat All Foods in Moderation

Products that carry the HCS logo are recognised as healthier options within their category. This can enhance consumer trust, improve brand credibility and open up greater marketing and placement opportunities—particularly in health-focused environments such as schools, hospitals and government institutions.

In alignment with national efforts to encourage healthier lifestyles, HCS-labelled products are also featured in public health campaigns such as the Eat, Drink, Shop Healthy Challenge, offering greater visibility and appeal to health-conscious consumers.

To qualify for the HCS programme, pre-packaged food products must meet HPB’s nutrient criteria for the relevant claim and category. They are also required to undergo mandatory laboratory testing of all core nutrients at an ISO/IEC 17025-accredited laboratory to verify the nutritional content before approval.

Nutri-Grade Mark

Beverages with Nutri-Grade Mark
Products within Scope of Extended Nutri-Grade Mark (effective mid-2027)

The Nutri-Grade mark is a mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labelling scheme introduced by the Health Promotion Board (HPB). It aims to help consumers make healthier food and beverage choices by targeting Nutrients of Concern, specifically Sugar and Saturated Fat. Products are graded based on the levels of these nutrients, offering a quick and clear indication of their nutritional quality.

The Nutri-Grade system classifies products into four grades:

  • Grade A – Lowest levels of sugar and saturated fat

  • Grade B

  • Grade C

  • Grade D – Highest levels of these nutrients of concern

NOTE : Sodium will be included as a nutrient of concern under the Nutri-Grade regulations starting from mid-2027.

Products that receive a Grade C or D are required to display the Nutri-Grade label prominently on the front of the packaging. Furthermore, products of grade D are subject to advertising restrictions.

Initially introduced for pre-packaged beverages in 2022, the Nutri-Grade scheme was quickly extended to cover freshly prepared beverages sold at outlets such as bubble tea shops, coffee chains and convenience stores. As part of Singapore’s ongoing strategy to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease, the framework will further expand in mid-2027 to include additional product categories that are significant sources of sugar, sodium and saturated fat in the local diet.

Mandatory Categories Currently under Nutri-Grade Regulations

  • Pre-packaged Beverages

  • Freshly-Prepared Beverages

  • Dispensed Beverages

Upcoming Categories that must bear Nutri-Grade Mark [Effective mid-2027]

  • Salt

  • Sauces and Pastes

  • Seasonings

  • Instant Noodles

  • Oil

Retailers, manufacturers, traders and distributors must ensure all relevant products are properly assessed and comply with Nutri-Grade regulations. This includes the mandatory inclusion of a Nutrition Information Panel (NIP) on the product, displaying a correctly-sized Nutri-Grade Mark and updating product packaging in accordance with the guidelines.
